Here’s a demonstration of a CO2 laser marking on a leather wallet.
Different kinds of lasers operate at different wavelengths. Those wavelengths affect the type of material you can mark on with that laser. For example, a fiber laser is capable of marking on metal and plastic, but not organic material, such as leather and wood.
On the other hand, CO2 lasers work well on organic material, as demonstrated in this video.
