In this video we laser cut a reciprocating rack and pinion gear system using our laser engraver and cutter. It is a great DIY project for science fairs, school projects or simply for fun. If you don’t have a laser cutter or laser engraving machine, you can always download the plans and cut the parts out with a band saw.
In this latest Invention Therapy DIY project, we show you how to build this cool gear system.
Thank you to Ronald Walters for inspiring us to build this project based on his original idea: https://youtu.be/HYAOew2Ln1Y
This fully functional reciprocating rack and pinion gear system is laser cut from .188″ (5mm) MDF and .160″ (4mm) acrylic. You can use MDF for all parts but making the rack gear from acrylic helps it slide easier.
Items needed for this build:
1 piece 2′ X 2′ .188″ (5mm) MDF
1 piece 12″ X 6″ .160″ (4mm) acrylic (optional, 5mm MDF can be used for all parts)
1 piece 1.0″ (25.4mm) long, 3/8″ diameter wood dowel
1 piece 2.5″ (64mm) long, 3/8″ diameter wood dowel
wood glue
